Nota de Torvalds:

Segundo parrafo del punto 9 de GPL:

"Each version is given a distinguishing version number. If the Program specifies a version number of this License which applies to it and "any later version", you have the option of following the terms and conditions either of that version or of any later version published by the Free Software Foundation. If the Program does not specify a version number of this License, you may choose any version ever published by the Free Software Foundation."

Habla de dos casos, y la nota habla de un tercero. Puede que me precipitara al ponerlo como ejemplo.

LA GPL es viral así que [i]myGaim[/i] necesariamente tiene que distribuir su código fuente y seguir usando la GPL para que los siguientes derivados también lo hagan.

Puf, pues en la lista del kernel ha habido discusiones kilométricas sobre eso... tanto que allí RMS es considerado un troll. Aunque bueno, para esto último también tuvieron que ver las discusiones sobre BitKeeper.
