Most people who are allergic to cats are allergic to a protein called Fel d 1, which is produced by the cat's skin and secreted onto the fur.

Its function is not known, although Jay Morgenstern, who identified the single gene responsible for the protein, thinks it might provide the cat with protection against bacteria. "I doubt [that eliminating the protein] will be toxic to the cat," he says.
